Asenderwishestopersuadeareceiverwitha(surprising)resultthatchallengesthepriorbelief.Theresultstemseitherfromsequentialprivateexperimentationormanipulation.Theincentivetoexperimentandtomanipulatedependsonthequalitythresholdforpersuasion.Higherthresholdsmakeithardertofindasurprisingoutcomeviaexperimentationandmayencouragemanipulation.Supposethereareobservablenon-manipulableandmanipulableresearchmethods.Forthedecisionquality,thequalitythresholdforpersuasionfornon-manipulablemethodsshouldbehigherthanformanipulablemethods.Wediscussphilosophyofscienceimplications,suchasfieldcontingentqualitystandardsandP-valueadjustments.
